What is Polycystic Kidney Disease?

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is an inherited disorder in which clusters of fluid-filled cysts develop in the kidneys. The cysts can accumulate more fluid, grow and multiple, enlarging the kidneys until they eventually reduce kidney function.

PKD symptoms usually don’t appear until 30 – 40 years old. The most common sign of PKD is high blood pressure. Ultrasound is a reliable, non-invasive, inexpensive diagnostic test to determine if you have PKD. Occasionally a CT scan or MRI may be advised.

PKD symptoms include:

High Blood Pressure
Back or Side Pain
Enlargement of the abdomen
Blood in the urine
Frequent bladder or kidney infections
